Maria Manuela Mendes is co-coordinator of the new national study on the Roma community

"Knowing, Mapping, Including The Roma/Ciganos Population in Portugal" is the name of the new research project that starts in October 2024 and aims to fill in the gaps in the living conditions of the Roma community in the country.

The study launched ten years after the only survey carried out in 2014 by the High Commissioner for Migration, is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and is the result of a partnership between the Institute of Sociology at the University of Porto and CIES-Iscte.

Co-coordinated by Maria Manuela Mendes, a researcher at CIES, the project aims to map strategic areas such as health, education and housing, integrating quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as promoting the active inclusion of the Roma community in the knowledge production process. The aim is to provide data to guide more effective public policies to combat inequalities and discrimination affecting this community.
