Book presentation | September 18, 2024

The Inequality Observatory is releasing a new book entitled "Jovens e o Trabalho em Portugal: Desigualdades, (Des)proteção e Futuro" by Renato Miguel do Carmo (ed.), Fátima Suleman, Inês Tavares, Ricardo Barradas and Rodrigo Vieira de Assis.

The book presentation session will take place on September 18, starting at 6.30pm, at Livraria Almedina in the Saldanha Atrium and will be attended by Alexandra Leitão, Member of the Portuguese Parliament.

Despite the enormous progress that Portugal has made over the last five decades, both in terms of economic development and the continuous growth and consolidation of public education, health and social security systems, the current labour market continues to face structural weaknesses that affect the working and socio-economic conditions of a wide range of workers, especially young people.

Jovens e o Trabalho em Portugal: Desigualdades, (Des)proteção e Futuro is the result of a series of analyses and reflections on a survey of the young population carried out in partnership with the Inequality Observatory and the Youth Employment Observatory. Based on a sample of more than 5,000 respondents, it discusses the different ways young people enter and participate in the labor market, and the forms of social protection in employment that they use or access. The results show that different social backgrounds and origins affect aspirations and opportunities and that belonging to other social categories is an attribute that not only generates social differentiation but also strong levels of inequality among young people.

This book puts forward priorities for public policies so that they are increasingly effective in responding to the imbalances and trends identified.
