PRESENTATION
The PhD in Public Policy trains researchers and teachers in higher education, as well as highly qualified professionals in the analysis, design, management and evaluation of public policies, in national, European and international organizations.
The program lasts three years, during which students have the opportunity to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the first year, doctoral students attend six compulsory seminars dedicated to the study of theories and methodologies in public policy, as well as two optional courses covering a diverse range of areas: social policy, defense and foreign relations, education, health, environment, immigration, media, science and technology, energy and development. In the other two years, doctoral students prepare their thesis by carrying out research at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES). In addition, they attend a research seminar, an international conference series and the Public Policy Forum.
The teaching and lecturing staff includes Portuguese and foreign experts, including social scientists, lawyers and economists, former ministers, experts and high-level political decision-makers.
OBJECTIVES
- Systematic understanding of the scientific field of public policy, and in particular the processes of internationalization and Europeanization associated with it,
- Up-to-date knowledge of analytical perspectives, concepts, theories and problems in multidisciplinary public policy studies;
- Proven ability to design and operationalize comparative models in this area;
- Ability to carry out significant research, respecting demanding parameters of academic quality and integrity;
- Ability to communicate with the academic community and society in general about the scientific area of public policy;
- Capacity for informed intervention in the analysis, design, management and evaluation of public policies, in national, European and international organizations.
