PRESENTATION
The PhD Programme in Modern and Contemporary History provides an in-depth knowledge of innovative topics from the Modern and Contemporary Periods, enabling scientific research and deepening of an area of specialization related to the choice of thesis topic, under the constant supervision and support of lecturers with vast experience in research, methodology and academic writing.

Message from the Coordinator
“It's important to encourage students to do thesis work on topics or historical sources that have not yet been studied, using innovative theoretical perspectives, making use of the fact that Iscte is a multidisciplinary school.”
The doctoral course takes place over 4 years, with the first year dedicated to teaching and the following three to writing the thesis with a tutorial seminar. The course includes an interdisciplinary component, taking advantage of the advanced training areas developed at Iscte, and is carried out in close articulation with the lines of scientific research developed within the scope of the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) and the Center for International Studies (CEI-Iscte).
