Medicalization of ageing, pharmaceuticalization and quaternary prevention
Workshop | June 09, 2026
CIES – Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology invites to the next session of its workshop series.
This session examines the processes through which ageing has increasingly been framed as a medical phenomenon, exploring the implications of the pharmaceuticalization of health practices in later life and the role of quaternary prevention as a critical counterpoint to overmedication and unnecessary clinical intervention.
The session will be presented by Olena Ignatenko, a doctoral researcher in Sociology at the Università Magna Graecia di Catanzaro, whose work sits at the intersection of the sociology of health, ageing, and critical perspectives on contemporary medicalization dynamics.
