Call for Applications for a 1 Research Grant for Doctoral Student

The Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) of Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon is opening a call for applications for (1) one  Research Grant for a Doctoral Student, within the scope of the research project CRIMJUR – The Criminal Jury in Portugal: History of a Forgotten Judicial and Political Institution (1822–1927), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (FCT), reference 2024.14335.PEX, under the following conditions:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in History and be enrolled in a PhD programme in History, in accordance with Article 6 of the Regulations for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (Regulation no. 950/2019).

PREFERENTIAL FACTORS
a) Research experience in archives, with particular expertise in handling and analysing archival documentation from the nineteenth century;
b) Knowledge of the Portuguese archival system and its organization;
c) Ability to conduct independent heuristic research;
d) Availability to consult documentation in archives at national and international levels;
e) Proficiency in data analysis and presentation tools, namely Excel and PowerPoint;
f) Proficiency in spoken and written English.

GRANT DURATION
The grant will have a duration of 12 months. The grant contract may be renewed within the duration of the research project, in accordance with paragraph 4 of Article 6 of the FCT Research Grant Regulations currently in force.

The call is open from 10 February to 3 March 2026. Applications must be submitted exclusively through the online form available on the Iscte Recruitment Portal at: https://recrutamento.iscte-iul.pt/jobs. Applicants must upload the following documents:

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae;
  • A copy of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates, including a transcript with the grades of all curricular units;
  • Proof of enrolment in a doctoral programme or, alternatively, a sworn statement declaring that this document will be provided by the date of contract signature;
  • Any other relevant supporting documents, including letter(s) of recommendation.

Applications submitted by any other means will not be considered.
