Grita Liberdade podcast – a public science initiative by MediaLab Iscte in partnership with PÚBLICO

What are the conditions for peace journalism in crisis and emergency contexts?
Impunity, along with the need for physical, financial, and digital security, as well as psychological and emotional support, presents significant challenges to journalists' professional autonomy and the full exercise of press freedom today.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Mozambique's independence, MediaLab Iscte, in partnership with the newspaper PÚBLICO, will release the podcast "Grita Liberdade" (Shout Freedom) by Carlos Picassinos on June 24.

This series features testimonies from eight Mozambican journalists who have direct experience in conflict and trauma scenarios. The reports, collected in the fall of 2024 following the post-election crisis, offer insights into the material constraints, ethical dilemmas, security threats, and strategies developed in the field to manage risk and instability.

This podcast serves as an empirical contribution aimed at understanding the conditions under which journalism is practised and challenged in contexts of extreme vulnerability.
