The seminar “Gender inequalities in Brazilian science” will take place on March 26, in a hybrid format. The event is organized by CIES-Iscte, in partnership with APS - Knowledge, Science and Technology Section.
The aim of the seminar is to discuss gender inequalities in Brazilian science, based on social indicators about students and teachers in higher education in the country. The presentation is divided into three parts. In the first, an overview will be given of the disparities in Brazilian science, which, as in other countries around the world, reproduces the “scissors effect”, i.e. the decrease in the inclusion of women as they move up the academic career ladder. This will be followed by an analysis of the differences between areas of knowledge and what they mean for policies to combat inequalities. In the third part, participants will look at a case study of political science, showing the advantages and disadvantages of different levels of analysis for understanding the multidimensionality of inequalities. The seminar ends with a comparative proposal on inequalities in the internationalization of science in Brazil and Portugal.
The seminar will be presented in Portuguese.
