It is with deep regret that we announce the death of our colleague, professor and researcher André Freire.
Throughout a remarkable academic career, André Freire stood out for his dedication to teaching and his invaluable contribution to understanding politics in Portugal and Europe, leaving a legacy of excellence and inspiration for all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Known for his integrity and commitment to democratic ideals, André Freire mentored several generations of students and researchers, generously sharing his vast knowledge and fostering critical thinking and academic rigor.
His research, publications and public interventions will remain a reference in Political Science studies, especially on topics such as electoral systems, political parties and electoral behavior, areas in which he worked with depth and originality.
André Freire was a Full Professor at the School of Sociology and Public Policy, Director of the PhD in Political Science and Coordinator of the CIES-Iscte research group on Politics and Citizenship. He was also Director of the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation, an infrastructure that aims to consolidate the tradition of study on democratic political representation, through research on elected representatives and voters, citizen participation and the link between voters and public policies.
His departure leaves an irreparable void in the academic field and in the lives of all those who lived with him, but his legacy will endure in his publications, research projects and as a theorist in the field of political science.
