ABSTRACT
The complexity of the lived experiences of ethnically and culturally mixed communities, shaped over the centuries by the dynamics of structural forces of colonial and post-colonial environments and historical and contemporary political regimes that have configured and continue to reconfigure the territory of Macau, have produced and are producing, among Macanese families, ambivalent identities and unique cultural expressions, now recognized and classified as intangible heritage of Macau and China.
In this seminar I will try to analyze the changing configurations of Macanese identity in the light of the intrinsic ethnic and cultural miscegenation of Macanese families, their ties to Macao and their characteristic transnationality and multilingualism. The way in which this identity, said to be “representative of the harmonious blend between East and West”, has been politically and economically enhanced as a tourist product in Macau's current post-colonial context, will also be the focus of this presentation.
