The Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) returns to the European Researchers' Night, which will take place on September 27, 2024 at the National Museum of Natural History and Science.
This year, which is dedicated to Science for Global Challenges, CIES will be present with two activities, in the context of the European project Developing algorithm literacy for all, to fight disinformation and foster e-inclusion with quality information for knowledge-based democratic societies (Algowatch) and Laboratory of Social Studies on Birth (nascer.pt).
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
Algorithm Challenges
Vítor Tomé and Ana Pinto Martinho
Participants will have the opportunity to get to know the Algowatch project by visiting the project's website and starting with four interactive quizzes on algorithms and artificial intelligence. After choosing and completing one of the quizzes, each participant will be asked to give detailed feedback on the questions and topics covered. This activity aims not only to enhance understanding of the concepts discussed, but also to contribute to and raise awareness of the challenges of artificial intelligence.
Understanding algorithms and AI is connected to media and information literacy, which helps prepare individuals to comprehend how algorithms and artificial intelligence function.
Born into Society: Exploring the Social Dimensions of Birth
Violeta Alarcão, Sónia Pintassilgo, Mariana Évora and Dulce Morgado Neves
In this science activity on childbirth, participants can explore the social dimensions of childbirth, such as cultural influences, public policies, gender roles, and individual experiences, through interactive dynamics adapted to the target audience, such as hands-on activities, quizzes, conversations, and guided tours.
In the hands-on activities, participants are invited to create artwork (paintings, drawings, or collages) on the topic of childbirth to stimulate discussion or to identify significant places in their childbirth journey (hospital, home, doctor's office, etc.) on a blank map and share their stories. The quiz and talk activities present games with questions related to childbirth from the perspective of myths and facts about childbirth, prenatal care, and the history of obstetrics.
