Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and the Portuguese Sociology Association established the 2023 prize in honour of João Ferreira de Almeida, a professor and researcher who distinguished himself for his decisive role in the field of social sciences and in institutionalising sociology as a scientific discipline in Portugal.

Every two years, the prize honours books and scientific articles in the field of sociology, authored by individuals or groups.

In the 1st edition of the João Ferreira de Almeida Prize, four members of the CIES team received awards:


Books (two published ex aequo)

• Sociological Research in Portugal: A Historical and Analytical Guide, by Fernando Luís Machado (Edições Afrontamento, 2022)
• Contesting Austerity: Social Movements and the Left in Portugal and Spain (2008-2015), by Tiago Carvalho (Amsterdam University Press, 2022)

Academic articles (two publications ex aequo)

• The weight of time and the experience of unemployment: daily life and future prospects, by Renato Miguel do Carmo and Maria Madalena d'Avelar (Current Sociology, vol. 69(5), 2021)
