The Portuguese Political Science Association (APCP) Prize, awarded to the best PhD Dissertation in these disciplinary areas, was given to Tiago Carvalho, researcher at CIES-Iscte.
His thesis Contesting Austerity: A Comparative Approach to the Cycles of Protest in Portugal and Spain under the Great Recession (2008-2015) was selected from among 13 theses submitted, all of them in the areas of Political Science and International Relations.
The APCP Prize aims to stimulate creativity and rigor in research work in the areas of Political Science and International Relations.

Tiago Carvalho is a researcher at CIES-Iscte and teaches at the Department of Political Economy at Iscte.
He is currently researcher of the project 'HOPES: HOusing Perspectives and Struggles. Futures of housing movements, policies and dynamics in Lisbon and beyond (2018-2021, FCT, PTDC/GES-URB/28826/2017), coordinated by Guya Accornero.
He received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge with a thesis on the cycle of anti-austerity protest between 2008 and 2015. Previously, he was a researcher at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence and the Free University of Bolzano. He co-coordinates with Guya Accornero the monthly seminar Social Movements and Political Action at CIES-Iscte.
