Message from the Coordinator

Patrícia Ávila

“Sociology's theoretical and methodological tools, which are constantly being updated, are essential for the in-depth study of contemporary societies and for understanding the challenges and uncertainties they present. In close coordination with CIES' research lines, the PhD in Sociology ensures the necessary conditions for carrying out a doctoral thesis in a real research context.”

Patrícia Ávila

The doctoral course takes place over four years. In the first year, doctoral students attend seminars on theories and methods, as well as thematic electives common to Iscte master's degrees in the social sciences. In the following 3 years, they prepare their thesis by carrying out research at CIES-Iscte. In addition, they attend a research seminar and an international cycle of conferences in sociology.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To provide doctoral students with advanced sociological training in theory and methodology, as well as an in-depth knowledge of sociological research carried out at international and national level.
  2. Ensure that the doctoral students' training, throughout the entire study cycle, takes place in a real research context, for which they rely on their close connection between the doctoral program and the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology.
  3. Contribute to the internationalization of Portuguese sociology by attracting foreign doctoral students and hosting international professors and researchers who collaborate with the doctoral activities.
